Priorities following a critical event:

  • Ensure the safety of employees and visitors in the office buildings (Responsibility of the HSR/Fire Wardens)
  • Mitigate threats or limit the damage that threats can cause (Responsibility of the HSM/HSR)
  • Have advanced preparations to ensure that critical business functions can continue
  • Have documented plans and procedures to ensure the quick, effective execution of recovery strategiesfor critical business functionsThe strategy is to recover critical business functions at the alternate site location. Short-term off-site location (for up to two weeks) will be clearly communicated to workers and displayed with the Emergency Evacuation information. A Business Continuity Coordinator is to be selected and will be the communication point for all company workers, contractors, clients, emergency services and other interested parties.

    Recovery Plan Phases

    Disaster Occurrence – continues until a decision is made to activate recovery plans. Activities in this phase include emergency response, notification of management, damage assessment activities, and declaration of the disaster.

    Plan Activation – Business Continuity Plans activated. Continues until alternate facility is occupied, critical business functions established, computer systems restored. Activities in this phase include notification and assembly of recovery teams, implementation of interim procedures, relocation to secondary site, re-establishment of data communications.

    Alternate Site Operations – continues until the primary facility is restored. The primary recovery activities during this phase are backlog reduction and alternate facility processing procedures.

    Transition to Primary Site – activities necessary to make the transition back to a primary facility location. All vital records affected by a facilities disruption are to be maintained and controlled by a nominated administrator.
